As part of its 2007/2008 season, Tigertail Productions brings Susan Marshall & Company to town for the Miami premiere of Cloudless, her Bessie-Award winning evening-length dance piece, Saturday and Sunday, 8:30 pm, March 14 and 15, at Miami Beach’s Colony Theatre. Cloudless is an eclectic collection of 18 intimate pieces (short-form narratives), ranging in length from 30 seconds to 5 minutes. A master at transforming everyday movement into powerful abstract drama, Susan Marshall has perfected a unique style of emotional storytelling through critically acclaimed dances.
Marshall, who has been awarded both a Macarthur Foundation “genius award” and a Guggenheim fellowship in her long career, created Cloudless for her company’s 20th Anniversary in 2006. On the stage copper-colored leaves fall and snow is caught in a broad gentle updraft as the dancers, dressed in colorful street clothes, move amongst and with each other in a series of vignettes, creating shifting symmetries both playful and erotic. The movement is choreographed to an ebullient score by Jane Shaw that veers from Philip Glass to Tommy James and the Shondells, and is punctuated throughout by sensual video effects. The performance contains brief nudity.
“Susan Marshall is one of the greats of the dance world,” says Mary Luft, Executive Director of Tigertail Productions. “Her work is poetic and luminescent, and we are so excited and honored to bring her to Miami with this outstanding production”
Susan Marshall & Company has performed more than thirty dance works since its formation in 1982 throughout the United States, Europe and the Far East and participated in many international festivals, including Spoleto, the Edinburgh International Festival, the American Dance Festival, the Los Angeles Festival, Vienna Tanz and the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Next Wave Festival. Marshall herself has also choreographed and directed Les Enfants Terribles, a dance/opera created in collaboration with composer Philip Glass, and created dances for the Lyon Opera Ballet, Frankfurt Ballet, Boston Ballet and Montreal Danse. She has collaborated as well with director Francesca Zambello on operas staged for the Los Angeles Music Center and the New York City Opera.
Tickets are $25 for general admission, $20 for seniors over 65 and students with a valid I.D., or $50 for VIP tickets with priority entrance and seating. Tickets may be purchased through Tigertail online at www.tigertail.org or by phone at 305 545 8546, through TicketMaster at their outlets or by phone at 305 358 5885 or 954 523 3309.

Orchestra Miami in Concert with Flautist Nestor Torres 2008 Season Continues April 18 at Miami-Dade County Auditorium What do you get when you mix one part jazz, one part Cuban Danzon and one part the lush classical sound of a full orchestral accompaniment? The next show in the much awaited 2008 first official season of Orchestra Miami, South Florida¹s new professional ensemble. On Friday, April 18 the Orchestra performs with guest artist Nestor Torres, the popular Grammy Award-winning flautist, in the groundbreaking show, En Concierto....Con Nestor Torres. The concert takes place at 8:00 pm at the Miami-Dade County Auditorium, 2901 West Flagler Street, in Miami.
Jazz flautist Nestor Torres has been captivating audiences for more than two decades with his distinctive mix of Latin, Jazz and Pop sounds. By transforming the flute¹s role in the current musical landscape, this remarkable virtuoso has earned a devoted following, and has practically established a new genre of popular music. In En Concierto....Con Nestor Torres he both goes back to his musical roots and at the same time expands his repertoire by performing with the classically based Orchestra Miami, under the direction of Music Director Elaine Rinaldi. Using a core of outstanding former members of the old Florida Philharmonic, the Orchestra soars with Torres¹ inspired flute playing as they tackle rumba-tinged symphonic compositions, traditional Cuban Danzones and contemporary works. The concert includes the World Premiere of the Danzon "Arcaño Al Bate," by the recently deceased icon Cachao.
"Our En Concierto concerts are Orchestra Miami¹s way of finding what is Miami, and putting it into music," says Elaine Rinaldi.. "Nestor Torres is the perfect choice for our first En Concierto, as he not only has the classical background, but the deep connection to Miami and its musical heritage. We are thrilled to be working with this stellar artist."
Nestor Torres was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. At 18, he moved to New York, where he studied jazz and classical at the Mannes School of Music, and later at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. During this time he played in Latin dance clubs mingling with the likes of Ray Barretto, Eddie Palmieri, Hector Lavoe and Tito Puente. Torres moved to Miami in 1981 and in 1989 released his successful debut album, "Morning Ride." He went on to perform and record with a variety of musical luminaries, including Gloria Estefan, Jon Secada, Herbie Hancock, and Wayne Shorter. In 2001, Nestor Torres won a Latin Grammy for his CD "This Side of Paradise." In his most recent release, "Dances, Prayers & Meditations for Peace," Torres layers numerous shades of Classical, Jazz and World Music with Hip-Hop and Reggaeton grooves and shows, by musical example, how we can embrace the universal elements that unite us.
Tickets for the En Concierto With....Nestor Torres are $30 to $60, with specially priced tickets for seniors and students with I.D. at $20, all reserved seating, and may be purchased through TicketMaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.com or by phone at 305 358 5885 or 954 523 3309.
